History

In 2000, Dr. Stephen Holland and Dr. Robert Leahy published Treatment Plans and Interventions for Depression and Anxiety Disorders.  The book became one of the most widely used texts in the field and played an important role in promoting the use of research-based CBT treatments by therapists around the world.  A second edition was published in 2012 with Dr. Lata McGinn.

In 2003, Dr. Holland founded Capital Institute to help meet the growing demand for CBT in the Washington, DC metro area.  The practice has grown steadily since then.  In 2020 we opened a new office in Bethesda, MD.

Who We Are

Compassionate Care

We know that life can be challenging. We seek to understand you – your unique history and identity, your strengths and your struggles. This allows us to provide you with the kind of support you need to try new ways of thinking and acting that can help you move toward the life you want.

If there’s one thing the research tells us, it’s that therapy is about more than just techniques and treatment protocols. The quality of the relationship with a therapist is one of the most important factors in success. We want you to feel understood and cared for. We don’t just bring our knowledge to our work, we bring ourselves.

Who We Are

Evidence-Based Practice

A core value of our practice is the commitment to provide therapies based on the best research-supported treatments. We specialize in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) because it has been proven effective in multiple research studies with real patients for a wide range of problems. We continually strive to stay current with the most recent research and innovations so that we can provide you with the kind of therapy most likely to help you get relief from your symptoms and live a better and more fulfilling life.

Who We Are

Collaborative Team Approach

We are more than a bunch of therapists who happen to work in the same place. Our therapists function as a cohesive whole, meeting regularly to learn from each other and collaborate. This means your therapist can draw on the years of experience, expertise, and collective wisdom of our entire practice.

We are also able to assemble a team of therapists when appropriate to meet your needs. A treatment team can be helpful for intensive treatments or in dealing with complex family issues.
