Our approach to therapy
We believe that you have the best chance of finding relief from your symptoms and reaching your goals when your treatment is based on techniques that have been proven in research studies to be effective for your particular problems.
We specialize in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) because it has been shown in clinical trials with real patients to be an effective treatment for anxiety, depression and many other psychological issues.
We believe that the best therapy always happens in an atmosphere of compassion and respect.
We strive to stay up to date with current research so that we can continue to provide the highest quality care for our patients.
We believe that no two patients are alike, so therapy must always be individualized to each patient’s needs, goals and preferences.
We know that no form of treatment works for everyone and that many different kinds of therapy may be helpful. We believe in a flexible approach that allows for the integration of techniques and ways of understanding from other forms of therapy when standard cognitive-behavioral therapies alone may not meet all of a patient’s goals.
What is CBT?
Cognitive-behavioral therapy is a practical, solution-focused form of psychotherapy that has been shown in a large number of studies to be an effective form of treatment for many psychological problems.
CBT focuses on teaching skills to help you change patterns of thinking and behavior that contribute to the symptoms and life problems you are experiencing. CBT also teaches skills for coping with difficult emotions.
CBT is an active form of treatment. Your therapist will work with you collaboratively to set an agenda for your sessions. You will be encouraged to practice skills on your own between sessions. While it may sometimes be helpful to discuss your past in order to understand the origins of your thought patterns, the emphasis in CBT is on what you can change in the present.
The ultimate goal of CBT is to help you live a happy, productive life that is consistent with your goals and values.
